Tip Of The Week: Three Smells All Home Owners Should Never Ignore

HOW TO SAVE MONEY (3)

Do you have a strange smell circulating throughout your home? Have you been ignoring this odor and hoping it would go away? Well, Tower is here to tell you to do otherwise because this smell could be coming from your furnace. Furnace smells are indicative of many issues that are important not to ignore for both the safety of your family and the furnace itself. Here are three odors you should never ignore in your home:

  1. Rotten Eggs: This odor is a profound indicator that you have a natural gas leak somewhere in your home. Natural Gas leaks should be taken care of immediately as they are very dangerous. Open the doors and windows of your home as soon as you smell this to let fresh air in and evacuate the house immediately. After doing so dial 9-1-1 while standing at a safe distance away from your home for and ask for assistance. It is best to contact your gas company as well.
  2. Metallic or Burnt Electrical: If you smell an odor close to an overheating motor this could be a sign that your furnace blower motor is seizing due to worn bearings. This can lead to the motor over working its self thus over heating the system causing the attached wires to melt. This is a large electrical hazard, you should turn off your furnace at your thermostat and call your HVAC technician to inspect your furnace to avoid greater damage to your home.
  3. Chemical Scent: Odors that resemble the chemical formaldehyde may indicate a cracked heat exchanger, which is a very serious issue. The heat exchanger is the mechanical function inside your furnace that transfers heat from the combustion chamber to the furnace plenum. If the heat exchanger is cracked, poisonousness carbon monoxide fumes can be circulating throughout your homes duct work which is how you are constantly smelling this odor. This being said, any chemical odor in your home should be handled with caution and it is best to call your technician for assistance.
