4 Steps to Properly Winterize Your System

Tip of the Week: 4 Steps to Properly Winterize Your System

Winter is coming, and soon it will be time to turn up the heat. Is your HVAC system ready? Here are a few steps you can take to winterize your HVAC.

Change the filter.

Dust and debris often builds up faster in winter than during the rest of the year. This means your air filter will get clogged more quickly. In order to keep your air clean, breathable, and flowing freely, it’s important to put in a clean filter at the beginning of winter, and continue to check it every month to see if it needs to be replaced again.

Wash and cover your outdoor unit.

You won’t be using your A/C for a few months, so it’s good to cover it while it lies dormant. But first, you should take the time to clean the unit. Start by turning it off then remove any leaves, branches, or other debris that may be blocking the vents and impeding airflow. If there’s tall grass or other obstructions around, get rid of those as well, making sure there’s at least one square foot of clearance around the entire unit. Then finally, spray it lightly with a hose, to wash off the dust buildup. Allow the unit to dry completely, then put a weatherproof A/C cover on it.

Remove the window unit.

If instead of an outdoor unit, you have a window A/C, bring it inside for the season. If it’s not going to be in use for an extended period, storing it indoors helps protect it from the elements, keeping it safe and allowing it to last longer.

Schedule your annual fall tuneup.

Before you start using your furnace for the season, call your HVAC technician for your annual maintenance visit. They’ll locate any issues that need to be addressed, oil the moving parts and tighten the loose parts, check your thermostat settings, and more, to make sure your system is operating at peak efficiency.
